The oldest intact dunes at Doonbeg are designated as a Special Area of Conservation by Dúchas, the Irish Heritage Service. Under a Management Agreement between the developer and Dúchas, those 50 acres of dunes are fenced off for preservation and are not in play.  The remainder of the site, including the course, is proposed as a Natural Heritage Area.
