Doonbeg Golf Club's Advisory Board
A member of the US Congress from 1980 until 1995, Mr. Mitchell served six years as the Senate Majority Leader. More recently, he served as the Chairman of the International Commission on Disarmament in Northern Ireland, which resulted in a historic peace accord. He received numerous honors for his role in the negotiations, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Mr. Awtrey is CEO of The PGA of America, the world's largest working sports organization. Since 1988, he has directed the planning, development, and activities of the PGA, including the Ryder Cup Matches and the PGA Championship. Earlier he served as the PGA's executive director and manager of tournament operations. He played on the PGA Tour from 1970-71.
Mr. Crowley is governor of the Bank of Ireland. He is also chairman of PJ Carroll & Company, which re-established the Irish Open in 1975 and was title sponsor for 17 years. Earlier, he led the family accountancy firm through several mergers until it became part of KPMG, where he was partner in charge of corporate recovery. He was the founding executive chairman of the Smurfit Business School, and is on numerous other boards, among them the US-Ireland Alliance.
Mr. Davenport is chairman of several organizations: Davenport Financial Group, a venture capital and consulting firm; Quail Creek National Bank in Oklahoma City; and the International Foundation for Retirement Education. He was a founding member of the Federal Retirement Thrift Investment Board. An accomplished golfer, he has competed in both the US and British Senior Amateur championships.
Dr. Alan Gillespie, CBE is Chairman of Ulster Bank Group, a subsidiary of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group. He also serves as Chairman of the Northern Ireland University Challenge Fund, is a member of the Advisory Board of the Judge Institute of Management Studies at the University of Cambridge, and is a non-executive director of Elan Corporation. Previously, Dr. Gillespie was a Partner of Goldman Sachs & Company, was Chairman of the Northern Ireland Industrial Development Board, and served the UK Government as Chief Executive of the Commonwealth Development Corporation.
Mr. Goodwin is the owner of Kiawah Island Golf Resort, which owns and operates the resort facilities on Kiawah. He established a reputation for turning around underperforming entities when he acquired AMF Bowling and sold it to Goldman Sachs in 1996. He is also a philanthropist, founding a $120 million charitable organization through the Community Foundation.
Mr. Huizenga is one of the world's foremost entrepreneurs. He is widely recognized for turning Blockbuster Entertainment Corp. into a household name before selling it to Viacom in 1994. Today he is chairman of AutoNation Inc., Extended Stay America, and Republic Services Inc. He brought expansion hockey and baseball teams to Florida, winning the World Series in 1997, and today owns the NFL's Miami Dolphins. He serves on the board of many civic organizations and was named "Humanitarian of the Year" by the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
Ms. Liguori has covered sports for the likes of CBS, ABC, USA Today, The Golf Channel, HBO, and New York's WFAN Radio. But she is best known as one of the top celebrity interviewers in the business - usually conducting her shows on the golf course. She is president of her own television production company and host of Sports Innerview with Ann Liguori, seen on Fox Sports Networks and regional sports networks nationwide.
Mr. McKee is president of McKee Development Inc., a real estate, marketing, and development firm that has built residential and golf communities throughout western North Carolina. The company's most notable development is the Wade Hampton Golf Club, which is among Golf Magazine's top 100 courses in the world and is the preeminent golf community of the Carolina mountains.
Mr. McNamara is the founder and chairman of the Hampstead Group, a real estate-oriented private equity firm. Earlier he was a senior executive with the Bass family of Forth Worth, Texas. He is board chairman of the FelCor Lodging Trust, one of the nation's largest hotel real estate investment trusts, and also serves on the boards of Omega Healthcare Investors and Fanklin Covey. He is a trustee of the Virginia Tech Foundation and the St. Mark's School of Texas.
A real estate developer/operator, Mr. Morrow is known in golfing circles as the president of La Quinta Golf Properties, which developed The Quarry at La Quinta Golf Club. Located in California's Coachella Valley, The Quarry at La Quinta is among Golf Digest's top 100 courses in America. He is also the CFO of Southern California Golf Course Management, a division of the Southern California Golf Association.
As the golf anchor for CBS Sports, which broadcasts the Masters and the PGA Championship, Mr. Nantz is one of the most recognizable voices in the industry. He hosts numerous other events for CBS, including the Super Bowl and college basketball's Final Four, and in 1998 was named National Sportscaster of the Year. He played on the University of Houston golf team with roommates Fred Couples and Blaine McCallister.
Mr. Norman designed the Doonbeg golf course. A two-time champion of the British Open, he was named PGA Tour player of the year in 1995 and won the Vardon Trophy three times. "The Shark" is also one of the game's most astute businessmen, having established numerous successful golf and lifestyle companies. He has more than 30 golf courses to his credit and considers Doonbeg to be his design legacy.
Ronan Rafferty, a native of Northern Ireland, won the British Boys title at 15 and played in the Walker Cup at 17 before beginning his professional golf career. He won the Volvo Masters in 1989 to become European Number One, was a member of the Ryder Cup team that same year, and has over a dozen career wins to his name. He has a particular interest in links golf and is well on his way to fulfilling his goal of playing every links course in Great Britain and Ireland. Ronan now devotes time to reviews and analysis on Sky Sports Golf.
Chairman of Giles and Ransome, a construction equipment company, Mr. Ransome is commonly associated with Pine Valley Golf Club – the New Jersey course ranked by GOLF Magazine as the world's best since 1985. He served as club president for 11 years and chairman for 13 years before retiring in 2001. He also designed Pine Valley's short course with fellow member Tom Fazio. He was one of the first recipients of the USGA Ike Grainger Award, given for 25 years of continuous service to the USGA, and has a scholarship named in his honor at St. Andrews University in Scotland.
Mr. Rupert is group chief executive of Compagnie Financière Richemont AG. The Swiss company owns some of the world's most distinguished luxury brands, including Cartier, Piaget, Montblanc, and Alfred Dunhill; the latter sponsors the Alfred Dunhill Cup, recently reformed as the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Mr. Rupert is also chairman of Rembrandt Group Ltd., which his father built from a small tobacco company into South Africa's largest industrial group. Richemont and Rembrandt jointly hold a significant stake in British American Tobacco.
Mr. Sullivan is the former United States Ambassador to Ireland. Serving from 1999 to 2001, he played a key role in Northern Ireland's ongoing peace negotiations. Previously he was governor of Wyoming, first elected in 1986 and re-elected in 1990. After completing his second term as governor, he held a fellowship at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government.
Terry Wogan, who hails from Limerick, has enjoyed a long and distinguished broadcasting career including both radio and television credits. His current BBC Radio 2 show attracts 8 million listeners daily. Terry won the Sony Radio Academy Award in 2001 and 2002 for Wake Up To Wogan. He also won the TV Times Favourite Personality of the Year for 10 consecutive years, and has presented "Children in Need" since 1980 raising in excess of 325 million pounds sterling. He was presented with an honorary OBE in the 1997 New Year's Honours List and more recently received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Limerick.
A true visionary in golf development, Mr. Barton is chairman and CEO of Landmark National. His firm won the bid to develop the Doonbeg property, then recruited the current owner/developer, Kiawah Development Partners. He has directed the development of top-quality residential communities, golf courses, hotels, and resorts around the world.
